Arts Overview / Art Electives

Faith Christian School’s selection of visual art, digital art, music, and performance art will be guided by a Christian world-view. God created us to be creative. In Art classes our students will learn skills and elements that will increase aesthetic awareness, gain an appreciation for forms and styles, learn historical, cultural and social influences, develop personal skills to produce products and performances, utilize their learning to critique art, and examine art’s influence on a view of the world from a Christian perspective. Additionally, we are committed to teaching Art because it enhances our students’ perceptions of the beauty of all creation.

All our students are given an opportunity to explore and develop their creativity. Our hope is that the experiences and skills acquired can be used for God’s glory— whether it be in ministry, for the community, or in a chosen career path.

Art Electives

The art portfolio course is an independent art program available for 9th – 12th grades.  Every quarter, a sketchbook is due with the following standards. Ten to twenty pieces of artwork will be due at the end of the marking period. The projects must be fully assembled at home. None of the artwork is accomplished during class time. This course will meet as a class only twice during each marking period; the first to explain the projects for the marking period and the second to critique the student’s work. Each student’s artwork is to be in a portfolio binder or page protectors in a three-ring notebook. The purpose of this class is to develop and strengthen visual perception and awareness, to reinforce methods of drawing, to encourage responsibility in the completion of assignments, and to create pieces of artwork to fulfill college and job portfolio requirements.

This class is an elective for the 11th and 12th graders. Fine arts offers an in-depth experience in drawing, painting, and three-dimensional design in a studio setting. Work is assigned at the start of each marking period. A student must use their art, organizational, and time management skills to complete the coursework for the marking period. All areas of art are explored.  Sketchbooks are due each week to monitor developing drawing skills.

This is a required course for all high school seniors.  The art history course is designed to promote the understanding and enjoyment of art. Students systematically move through the earliest forms of art recorded to the study of Modern Art. They are also introduced to the great artists of the past, along with contemporary artists.

An elective for ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students with an interest in contemporary crafts. Students may take this course each year. It focuses on the materials and on the manual labor of the artist as part of the works’ significance, and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility. The focus is on the use of different types of materials to construct practical or decorative objects. Using clay, wood, metal, paper, and leather, students produce projects such as jewelry, sculpture, books, baskets, paper-making, print-making and mixed media projects.

Fiber Arts is an elective for ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students with an interest in fiber and textile arts. Students may take this course each year. Fiber art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. Textile arts are arts and crafts that use plant, animal, or synthetic fibers to construct practical or decorative objects. Fiber Arts focuses on the materials and the manual labor of the artist as part of the work’s significance, prioritizing aesthetic value over utility.
